Classic would determine the champions in the older horse and 3-year-old colt divisions. Five of the eight Classic starters went postward as millionaires, and were considered Eclipse Award contenders. At the finish, however, the picture remained unclear as Darby Dan Farm’s Proud Truth, an early favorite for the Triple Crown who had been plagued by injury, wore down a determined Gate Dancer to take the $1.35 million winner’s share. The Classic marked the second win of the day for jockey Jorge Velasquez, who had earlier piloted Twilight Ridge to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.
