Skywalker upset champions Precisionist and Turkoman, the two ranking older horses in training, to win the third running of the $3 million Breeders’ Cup Classic. Around the clubhouse turn, jockey Jerry Bailey, on Herat, set the pace on the inside and Laffit Pincay, on Skywalker, moved alongside, boxing Precisionist in. When the colt finally broke free, Skywalker was two lengths in front with only a quarter-mile left to run. Favored Turkoman was fanned six-wide when entering the stretch, and could not catch Skywalker despite a strong drive to the finish. It was the second win of the day for Pincay, who rode Capote to victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Precisionist and Turkoman’s failure to win the Classic virtually clinched Horse of the Year honors for Lady’s Secret.
