Both horses figured to be leading contenders for titles within their respective divisions, though a victory in the Classic likely would give either one the Horse of the Year title. The 4-year-old Ferdinand, even-money favorite of the Hollywood Park bettors, gave four pounds to the 3-year-old Alysheba under the weight-forage conditions of the race.
