Ben Rochelle’s 3-year-old filly Very Subtle dominated the field at every call of the six-furlong Sprint to hand the heavily favored Groovy his first defeat in seven starts during 1987. Though Groovy went on to be named Champion Sprinter in 1987, his loss marked the second consecutive year the colt was upset as the odds-on favorite for the Sprint, having finished a disappointing fourth to winner and eventual champion Smile in 1986. Owner Ben Rochelle had previously campaigned Very Subtle in partnership with Carl Grinstead. When Grinstead died in early 1987, the partnership’s horses were sold at the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association’s fall mixed sale in October. From that dispersal, Rochelle purchased Very Subtle for $1.2 million, a record for a horse sold at public auction in California.
