Trainer Bill Badgett knew he had a special filly after Go for Wand broke her maiden by four lengths at Belmont Park in September. Three races later, the Christiana Stables’ colorbearer backed her trainer’s confidence by rolling to a 23/4-length victory in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Sent off as the second choice at 5-2 behind Stella Madrid, the daughter of Deputy Minister avenged her narrow defeat to Stella Madrid in the Frizette Stakes and earned an Eclipse Award as Champion 2-Year-Old Filly. It was jockey Randy Romero’s third Breeders’ Cup win, all with fillies, following Sacahuista (1987) and Personal Ensign (1988). |
