The pre-race attention for the Breeders’ Cup Mile centered on European star Zilzal, unbeaten in five career starts, including the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and Sussex Stakes. The even-money favorite broke badly, however, and finished sixth. Steinlen, the second choice at 9-5, gave trainer D. Wayne Lukas his 10th Breeders’ Cup Championship victory. Running sixth with two furlongs to the wire, Jose Santos found room along the rail and sent Steinlen to a 3/4-length victory. It capped off a spectacular season for the 6-year-old son of Habitat, who was later named Champion Turf Male. |
