In what promised to be the most competitive and balanced race of the day, the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Turf drew a full field of 14 horses, including the lukewarm (3.40-1) favorite, El Senor, 1988 Turf Champion Sunshine Forever and Arc de Triomphe runner-up Behera. The outstanding field of turf specialists was upset, however, by 8-1 shot Prized, a 3-year-old colt making his first start on the turf. Trained expertly by Neil Drysdale, Prized prevailed by a head over French invader Sierra Roberta. It was the third consecutive year a U.S.-based horse won the race and the Budweiser Breeders’ Cup trophy, which is presented to an official of the national racing authority on behalf of the winning horse.
