A record-setting performance on the Churchill Downs turf course earlier in the year by Opening Verse went unnoticed as an impressive field of 14 horses went to the gate for the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Favorites In Excess and Tight Spot and European stars Priolo and Polar Falcon were the headliners, but in the second upset of the day, Opening Verse posted a 11/4-length win. Sent off at 26-1, the 5- year-old son of The Minstrel was ridden confidently by Pat Valenzuela. The victory was the first of two in the 1991 Championship for both Valenzuela and owner Allen Paulson. |
