The Breeders’ Cup Classic attracted an international star-studded field of 14 horses competing for the $3 million purse. Horse of the Year honors also were on the line for favorites A.P. Indy and Pleasant Tap. Winner of the Belmont Stakes, A.P. Indy was the 2-1 favorite, with Jockey Club Gold Cup winner Pleasant Tap second choice at 5-2. Under a masterful ride by Breeders’ Cup MVP Eddie Delahoussaye, A.P. Indy scored a resounding two-length victory over Pleasant Tap. Named Champion 3-Year-Old Male and Horse of the Year, A.P. Indy retired to Lane’s End Farm with career earnings of over $2.9 million. The son of 1977 Triple Crown winner Seattle Slew and half-brother to Preakness winner Summer Squall was the highest priced yearling in the 1990 summer sales at $2.9 million. |
