The eyes of the racing world were fixed on Claiborne Farm’s Lure, who was seeking to become the first horse ever to win three Breeders’ Cup Championship races. The winner of the Mile in 1992 and 1993, Lure was sent to post position 14 as the 9-10 favorite. It was English invader Barathea, however, who stole the show with an impressive three-length win over two members of the mutuel field, Johann Quatz and Unfinished Symph. Sent off at 10-1 odds, Barathea trained for the Mile at Newmarket with specially-designed turns to simulate those at Churchill Downs. Trainer Luca Cumani and jockey Frankie Dettori both won their first Breeders’ Cup Champonship race. Owned by Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum and Gerald Leigh, Barathea retired after the Breeders’ Cup with career earnings of nearly $1.2 million. |
