Five years after his sire, Unbridled, won the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Belmont Park, a member of his first crop of foals, Unbridled’s Song, took the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Flying on the inside under Mike Smith as they turned for home, Unbridled’s Song hooked Hennessy, and the two ran as a pair to the wire, a neck separating them at the finish. Unbridled’s Song was making just his third start, having broken his maiden in late August at Saratoga before finishing fourth after setting the early pace in the Champagne Stakes over the same Belmont surface he would race to glory on three weeks later. Unbridled’s Song was the first Breeders’ Cup starter for his owner, Ernie Paragallo’s Paraneck Stable, and trainer, Jim Ryerson. |
