runners in the 13-horse field under 10-1 odds finished one through six. The
winner was Northern Spur, who went to the lead in the turn for home and then fought determinedly down the stretch to hold off Freedom Cry by a neck. Favored entrymates Carnegie and Tamure finished third and fourth. The length of his neck proved important, giving Northern Spur the Eclipse Award for Champion Turf Male. Northern Spur is the first Breeders’ Cup starter for Oaklawn Park owner Charles Cella. His trainer, Ron McAnally, was winning his fourth Breeders’ Cup race and jockey Chris McCarron his sixth.
