From humble beginnings as a $6,000 yearling at the Keeneland September sales to overcoming a torn hoof and mysterious hind-end lameness, Da Hoss was somewhat of a hard-luck story. But there was no doubt the gelding had talent. He set a world record for six furlongs at two before maturing into a multiple graded stakes winner. On championship day 1996, luck was with Da Hoss. He was coming into the race in top form and, although the field for the Breeders’ Cup Mile was large, Da Hoss cleanly weaved his way through and around 13 rivals to cross the wire 11/2 lengths better ter than Spinning World. |
