Without the undefeated Silver Maiden in the field, Kaster and Propson’s
Countess Diana easily inherited the favorite’s role. Bred in Kentucky by Richard Kaster, Countess Diana, like her stablemate Favorite Trick, might also have been undefeated coming into the race, except for throwing a shoe leading halfway through the Debutante. The Deerhound filly broke fast, tracked the pacesetting Bay Harbor to the far turn, then could not be contained any longer by jockey Shane Sellers. She swept to the lead, dropped to the rail and drew off by 8 1/2 lengths under the wire in 1:42.11, a new Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies record. Her win was the first knockout blow of trainer Pat Byrne’s one-two punch in the Juvenile races. Countess Diana was a decisive Eclipse Award winner for outstanding 2-Year-Old Filly. |
