Trainer Bob Baffert held the aces here with the first and second choices,
Silverbulletday and Excellent Meeting. The only other runner in the field with odds of less than 15-1 was the Bill Mott-trainee, Confessional. Silverbulletday had a commanding lead in the stretch but Excellent Meeting came from far back and though she was gaining with every stride in deep stretch, Silverbulletday prevailed by a half-length. Her win capped off a stellar year for owner Mike Pegram that also included a Kentucky Derby and Preakness win. Silverbulletday clearly dominated her division in 1998 by winning five graded stakes and over $1 million on her way to an Eclipse Award. |
