Coming into the Juvenile, Anees had only his maiden win to boast about, which was no doubt the reason why he was sent postward at 30-1. Trainer Alex Hassinger had confidence in the colt, knowing he was a late maturer and developing at just the right time for Breeders’ Cup. The top two choices in the Juvenile, Dixie Union and Forest Camp, had beaten Anees in the Norfolk one month prior. On a speed-favoring track, there was a mad scramble for the lead, and at the half pole Anees was dead last. Gary Stevens, contract rider for The Thoroughbred Corp., took Anees wide into the stretch and, with a ton of horse under him, took aim on the leaders and won under a drive by 21/2 lengths. With the victory came an Eclipse Award for outstanding 2-Year-Old Male. |
