In a race known for speed, none have been faster in the Breeders’ Cup or at Churchill Downs than Kona Gold. Caller One took an uncontested lead, but, when he began to tire in the stretch, Kona Gold charged up and held off a bid from Honest Lady. Trainer and co-owner Bruce Headley, who notched his first Breeders’ Cup winner, is noted for the patience he has with his horses, taking the time and care to keep them racing soundly past their juvenile years. Kona Gold is no exception to this pattern, having raced in three consecutive Breeders’ Cups, finishing third in ’98 and second in ’99. Kona Gold was the unanimous choice for Sprinter of the Year. |
