In the 2001 running of the Breeders’ Cup Mile, Val Royal had only one horse
beaten going into the turn for home. Jockey Jose Valdivia took his charge to the outside going eight-wide on the turn and finished with an overwhelming late run to win in record-setting time. Trainer Julio Canani had his second Mile winner, the first being Silic, who won in 1999. Owner David Milch, though not present this year, has been in the Breeders’ Cup winner’s circle before: back in 1992 with Gilded Time. Val Royal’s sire, Royal Academy, who won the 1990 Mile (also on the Belmont turf), was rewarded with his first winner, as was rider Jose Valdivia and breeder, French businessman Jean-Luc Lagardere.
