After disappointing efforts from his runners in two previous races, trainer Bobby Frankel didn’t think he’d ever win a Breeders’ Cup race. That all changed in the Sprint with Squirtle Squirt, a bay son of Marquetry, another of Frankel’s trainees from years past. The field included a host of seasoned veterans, such as last year’s winner, Kona Gold, who was returning for his fourth Breeders’ Cup. The speedball filly Xtra Heat immediately went to the front to set the pace, with Caller One challenging on her outside. Squirtle Squirt, with Jerry Bailey piloting, stalked those two, then was hard-driven to the wire to prevail by a half-length. An abundance of Eclipse Award winners emerged from the Sprint: Bobby Frankel for best trainer, Jerry Bailey for outstanding jockey; Xtra Heat won the 3-year old filly division and Squirtle Squirt the Sprint division. |
