In 2001, Starine tired in the stretch, finishing 13 lengths behind the winner, Banks Hill. This year the tables were turned; Banks Hill stalked Starine throughout but could never get past her and ended up second, beaten a lengthand- a-half. Bobby Frankel, owner and trainer of Starine, also trained Banks Hill for her second Breeders’ Cup bid. John Velazquez was aboard for his second victory of the day. Golden Apples, favored at 5-2, finished not far back in fourth after a troubled trip and was subsequently awarded the Eclipse statue for outstanding Female on the Turf.
