If anybody was concerned about the Europeans not running up to expectations, all those worries were dismissed when Irish-breds took first, second and third in the Filly & Mare Turf. The feat was accomplished with three different running styles as well — Islington made her winning run from mid-pack, L’Ancresse ran on the front end and just missed, while Yesterday turned in a game effort from well back. Islington, making a return visit to the Breeders’ Cup after finishing third last year in a very troubled trip, was sent off the 5-2 favorite. Kieren Fallon, regular rider of Islington, notched his first Breeders’ Cup victory, and trainer Sir Michael Stoute enjoyed his third success. Bobby Frankel’s two well-regarded entrants, Heat Haze and Tates Creek, finished fourth and eighth, respectively. Islington took the 2003 honors for Outstanding Turf Female. |
