When Halfbridled broke her maiden so impressively at Del Mar, Richard
Mandella said that she reminded him very much of Phone Chatter, the filly that he trained to win the Juvenile Fillies in 1993. Possibly, fate would smile on him ten years later when the undefeated daughter of 1990 Classic winner Unbridled would compete in the same race over the same track. Halfbridled, paired with Julie Krone, broke alertly, and then raced in mid-pack while wide most of the way. At the head of the stretch, Halfbridled took the lead from Victory U.S.A. and steadily pulled away from the late threat of Ashado. Krone became the first female jockey to win a Breeders’ Cup race (not including steeplechase), while Mandella and the Wertheimers enjoyed their second Breeders’ Cup success together. Halfbridled was voted the outstanding 2-Year-Old Filly of 2003.
