Curious to see how the Europeans would fare after a long journey, racing under the hot sun, and over a very firm course, it was gratifying to many that they enjoyed success in all three Breeders’ Cup grass races in 2003. First came the Mile, in which Six Perfections won for the Niarchos family and trainer Pascal Bary, the same connections of Domedriver, last year’s Mile winner. After the striking black filly overcame her reluctance to load in the gate, Six Perfections settled mid-pack, rallied wide on the turn and persevered through the stretch to prevail by less than a length over Touchoftheblues. Six Perfections, the fourth filly to win the Mile, is out of a half-sister to Miesque, Breeders’ Cup Mile winner in ‘87 and ‘88. Jerry Bailey won his 14th Breeders’ Cup race and fourth consecutive Eclipse Award. |
