Cajun Beat paid almost $50 for a $2 bet, and for good reason – his trainer had never had a Breeders’ Cup starter, his jockey finished last on his only previous Breeders' Cup mount, he was facing older horses for the first time, and he was coming from an outside post. In the end, none of that mattered. Under the guidance of Cornelio Velasquez, Cajun Beat broke well, pressed the pace outside front-runners Zavata and Shake You Down through the turn, opened up into the lane, and was not threatened. This was the third win for Satish Sanan and his Padua Stables, this time in partnership with Joe Iracane and John Iracane (father and son, respectively). With a time of 1:07.95, Cajun Beat broke the 1:08 barrier for only the third time in 20 Breeders’ Cup runnings. The Eclipse Award for best sprinter went to 6th-place finisher Aldebaran. |
