Nearly 13 minutes is a long time to wait for a result from a photo finish, but the Turf is a $2 million race and the stewards wanted to be absolutely sure. Dick Mandella looked skyward with tented hands, while Aidan O’Brien held a cell phone to his ear, pacing nervously. Their charges, Johar and High Chaparral, respectively, circled on the track nearby; at the finish line, neither jockey could tell who the winner was. When the decision came down that there had been a dead-heat for the win, everyone concerned was pleased, but most of all, relieved. Mandella nailed down his third win of the day, a feat previously accomplished only by D. Wayne Lukas in 1988. Johar was the third Breeders’ Cup winner for the owner, The Thoroughbred Corp., founded by the late Prince Ahmed bin Salman. |
