They say experience pays and, in this case, it may have been true. Wilko came into the Juvenile with ten starts, four more than the next most experienced rival. Maybe because he did all his racing on the turf, hadn’t been further than a mile, or hadn’t won a stakes race in Europe, Wilko’s record did not impress the bettors much, as he went postward at nearly 30-1. At the quarter pole, jockey Dettori was thinking he was running for fourth when he swung to the outside and found Wilko taking off like a house afire, reaching the wire just less than a length ahead of Afleet Alex. Dettori celebrated his third Breeders’ Cup win in his customary ebullient fashion, while trainer Jeremy Noseda was ecstatic on the sidelines with his first Breeders’ Cup entrant and winner. J. Paul Reddam, who bought 75% ownership earlier in the month from Susan Roy, had his first win. |
