Born on February 14, 2002, Sweet Catomine has given her owner/breeders, Martin and Pamela Wygod, a good reason to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Active participants in California racing and breeding for many years, the Wygods have now seen the fruits of their labors realized with a Breeders’ Cup winner and Eclipse champion. Coming off an impressive win in the Oak Leaf Stakes at Santa Anita, Sweet Catomine was sent off as the 5-2 favorite. Overcoming traffic troubles on both turns, the brilliant daughter of Storm Cat took control in midstretch and drew away with authority, finishing in a final time faster than her Juvenile counterpart, Wilko. Balleto, the first UAE-bred competitor, ran close to the pace throughout, but was no competition for the winner. The victory was the third Breeders’ Cup triumph for Julio Canani, who also trained Mile winners Silic (’99) and Val Royal (’01). |
