Like the Hall of Fame pro football lineman that he was named after, Singletary showed his own power and determination when he captured the 21st running of the Breeders’ Cup Mile. From humble beginnings, Singletary sold for just $3,200 at the 2001 Keeneland October yearling sale. He was then resold privately to his owners, Little Red Feather Racing, a syndicate of 13 partners headed up by Billy Koch, grandson of the late movie director/producer Howard Koch. Overlooked in the betting due to the presence of heavy hitters like Nothing to Lose, Artie Schiller and Six Perfections, Singletary had a fairly clean trip while never far off the pace. He bore down in the last three sixteenths and held off the late challenge of Antonius Pius. It was the first Breeders’ Cup starter for Californiabased trainer Don Chatlos, one-time roommate of winning rider David Flores. |
