An Eclipse Award for Champion Turf Horse undoubtedly didn’t cross the mind of Marty Wolfson when he took over training of Miesque’s Approval in late 2005. Former trainer Bill Mott could only coax two wins out of the horse during the ’04 and ’05 seasons. After a freshening at Live Oak, near Ocala, Florida, Miesque’s Approval performed amazingly well during his 2006 campaign as a 7-year-old. But even four stakes wins didn’t garner much respect at the windows for the Mile; the bettors were going for English import Araafa, the filly Gorella and California speedster Aragorn. Piloted confidently by regular rider Eddie Castro, Miesque’s Approval came wide around the turn and into the stretch and won well-clear of the next six horses blanketed on the wire. Despite being in racing and breeding for some 40 years, this was the first Breeders’ Cup win for owner-breeder Charlotte Weber.
